Growing notes

Zinnias are very prolific bloomers all season long, performing better in garden beds than containers, and can be direct-seeded once soil temperature reaches at least 70°F. They prefer full sun for 8+ hours a day, well-drained soil, and are highly attractive to pollinators, particularly butterflies.

Harvest signs

Removing old blooms from the plant will promote the production of new flowers; for cut flowers, change water every two days to keep displays fresh

Common diseases · 3
Powdery Mildew: Zinnias are highly susceptible to powdery mildew; can be treated with fungicide; prevented by avoiding wet foliage and ensuring good air circulation
Damping Off: Occurs during seed propagation when media stays too wet; prevented by letting media dry out slightly between waterings
Fungal Diseases (general): Too much water can cause fungal diseases; keeping soil surface clean helps prevent disease

Tip: Strong pollinator attractor. Plant near fruiting crops.

Common questions

How much water does zinnia need?

Zinnia has middle-of-the-road water needs. Aim to keep soil moisture around 25–50%, letting the top inch dry slightly between waterings rather than staying soggy.

Can I grow zinnia in a raised bed or container?

Yes — zinnia does well in raised beds and is happy in a decent-sized container too, as long as drainage is good.

Does zinnia come back every year?

No — zinnia is an annual. It completes its life in one season, so you replant it each year.
