Growing notes

Radishes do best when grown in cooler conditions, and are tolerant of cold weather. Drought stress can cause the roots to develop poor flavor and tough texture.

Harvest signs

Garden radishes are usually ready for harvest three to five weeks after planting. You can pull them any time they reach a usable size (about 1 inch in diameter). For daikon, the shoulders, or the top of the vegetable, typically stand up out of the soil, so the width of the root will be obvious.

Common questions

How much water does radish need?

Radish has middle-of-the-road water needs. Aim to keep soil moisture around 35–55%, letting the top inch dry slightly between waterings rather than staying soggy.

Can I grow radish in a raised bed or container?

Yes — radish does well in raised beds and is happy in a decent-sized container too, as long as drainage is good.

Does radish come back every year?

No — radish is an annual. It completes its life in one season, so you replant it each year.
