Growing notes

Nasturtiums grow best in well-drained soil that is not too fertile, and thrive in early summer and fall. Sow seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has had a chance to warm up.

Harvest signs

Best to use fresh young leaves and flowers; can be harvested throughout the season. When plants become stressed, harvested leaves and flowers have a stronger flavor that can be off-putting.

Tip: Edible flowers. Great pest deterrent near vegetables.

Common questions

How much water does nasturtium need?

Nasturtium has middle-of-the-road water needs. Aim to keep soil moisture around 20–40%, letting the top inch dry slightly between waterings rather than staying soggy.

Can I grow nasturtium in a raised bed or container?

Yes — nasturtium does well in raised beds and is happy in a decent-sized container too, as long as drainage is good.

Does nasturtium come back every year?

No — nasturtium is an annual. It completes its life in one season, so you replant it each year.
